With four cones create a 10x10 meters square ("D" in the picture) about 15 meters distant from a goal (as shown in the picture). Within the square place two defenders without the ball, with vests (green), while a goalkeeper defends the goal. Form two identical training circuits on either side of the square ("A" and "B"): the circuits consist of four markers (spaced 2 meters apart), a cone and a pole as shown in the picture. These circuits will be approximately 10 meters long: the markers and the cone are arranged in a row (place the cone 3 meters from the last marker), while the pole is set approximately 1 meter and a half from the cone, laterally. The strikers (red) start with the ball from the first marker, in pairs, one on each circuit. The other players wait in line for their turn.
- At the coach's signal players with the ball start simultaneously and face the circuit dribbling and controlling the ball
- Markers have to be crossed by controlling the ball with a zig-zag movement
- Once in proximity of the last marker, the players control the ball and avoid the pole changing direction towards the square and ending the circuit at the cone, right before zone D
- At this point, the coach gives a signal, indicating a group (“B” in the example)
- The player of group “A” performs a pass to the coach and runs at full speed in the square
- The player of the group called by the coach (“B”) enters the square dribbling and trying to shoot at goal, engaging a 2 vs 2 with the defenders and the teammate of the opposite group
- After a shoot at goal the strikers replace the defenders inside the square, while defenders go to group A and B and wait their turn
- Technical movements on the circuits must be determined by the coach before starting the series: change the foot used to control the ball and vary which foot part to use (internal, external, left, right...)
- Inside zone D a 2 vs 2 free game is played; strikers must perform a through ball to shoot at goal
- If the defenders gain back the ball, they can shoot at goal (not before having performed at least a couple of passes inside the square)
- Place only one defender in the square, turning the exercise into a 2 vs 1
- Change the circuits by placing small hurdles or poles to train coordination skills, placing the ball at the end of the circuit
- Increase or reduce field size according to players abilities
- Pay attention to the position of the defenders during the exercise, shoulders should always be turned towards the goal
- Strikers must score as soon as possible
- Technical (or coordinative) circuits should be performed with maximum intensity
- Exercise focuses on defensive positioning in 2 vs 2 dynamic situations
